Fat - the good, bad and ugly.

When Matt showed up for his follow up session, which was scheduled for just over one month from the initial appointment, he appeared visibly different. He looked much slimmer, his skin has cleared up and appeared quite radiant despite the usual gloom of New York's winter. At our session he sipped the customary tea I serve during the consultations and spoke enthusiastically about the changes in his lifestyle and how much more energy he felt. Matt was clearly inspired. The mechanics of my approach appealed to him and sunk right in, but there was this one thing that he just couldn't make sense of. When I asked Matt what it was, he just shook his head and said, "I just don't understand, how could I be eating all this fat and slim down all at the same time!"

This question comes up quite often in my practice, and rightfully so. After all, for years we have been taught to avoid fat as the plague. Indeed there are types of fat that would fit this description, but on the other hand there are types of fat that are crucial sources of nourishment and serve as the pillars of health.

One of the most intelligent cells of the human organism happens to be the adipocyte. This tiny fat cell is packed with triglycerides and serves as energy storage. Triglycerides are composed of fatty acids and glycerol. The efficiency of this brilliant cell's function greatly depends on the type of fats that are included in your diet. The ratio and the physical condition of the fatty acids making up those fats are of great importance. Once the proper amounts of high quality fats are introduced in to the diet, the changes can be quite dramatic.

When Matt's dietary habits received the much needed overhaul, his body had thanked him by shedding the unnecessary weight, increasing his energy levels and with a few other positive changes he hadn't even expected.

Well then, you may ask, why all this fat phobia? Why is the media and the medical profession demonizing this innocent molecule?

In science, research always produces multiple results. Even though the initial motives may appear noble, the following discoveries may change that. Cholesterol is a good example. When it was discovered that this essential molecule was among the ones present in the arterial plaque it became the villain simply by being at the wrong place at the wrong time. All these years the cholesterol lowering drugs were the sexiest thing to use as preventive care for heart disease, diabetes and just about anything. And this "preventive care" brought in enormous profits to the Big Pharma and a slew of other quick witted entrepreneurs. All you have to do is to look around and see the enormous amount of business this "war on fat" has brought about to many industries.

No one has bothered to further study and examine what will happen to the human organism when the production of Cholesterol is blocked. Well, the results are as clear as day: the current state of health in the US is as sad as the Standard American Diet. And, by the way, the occurrence of heart attacks and diabetes have only increased and are currently the top causes of death in this country.

[One sexy Villain + One expensive War = Extreme Profit]. Doesn't this formula look familiar? How many times has this worked out for the human kind and how many times for the select few and their deep pockets?
